NAIROBI, Kenya — The government has significantly expanded the Mama Rachel Ruto Specialist Hospital in Mutuini, Dagoretti South, Nairobi, in a major push to strengthen Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improve access to specialised healthcare services.

The facility has been upgraded from a 40-bed hospital into a 400-bed Level 5 specialist referral hospital and is expected to serve nearly 1.5 million patients annually once fully operational. The upgrade is part of Kenya’s broader healthcare reform agenda under the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) framework, which seeks to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

The upgraded hospital now features:

  1. Advanced maternity and newborn care units
  2. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) wards
  3. A renal centre for dialysis services
  4. Modern diagnostic and radiology services, including CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasounds
  5. Specialised laboratories (capable of processing 400 tests per hour)
  6. Fully equipped operating theatres
  7. Two human milk banks to support neonatal care

According to Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo (State Department for Internal Security and National Administration), structural works at the hospital have been fully completed, with the project now in its final phase of installing medical fittings and equipment. The project is being delivered through a collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Health, and the Nairobi County Government.

The expansion is expected to ease pressure on major referral hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital by bringing specialised treatment services closer to communities. Beyond treatment, the hospital will support medical training, specialised consultations, and referral services for patients within Nairobi and neighbouring counties. The facility is projected to create over 600 jobs for health workers and an additional 400 indirect jobs.

The government says the project reflects its continued commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure under Universal Health Coverage (UHC), with a specific focus on improving maternal and child healthcare outcomes.
