President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja have officially commissioned the KSh 3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover alongside a KSh 2 billion El Niño drainage plan, signaling a major upgrade for the capital’s infrastructure.

The high-profile launch, which took place on Monday, June 29, 2026, highlights a deepening political and developmental alliance. Both leaders vowed that their strategic cooperation pact will successfully transform Nairobi into a modern, highly functional city.

A central piece of this infrastructure drive is the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover. The project serves as a key investment enhancing Nairobi’s transport network, which is expected to ease traffic congestion and streamline movement across major city suburbs.

Alongside the road network upgrades, the administration is tackling climate risks through the KSh 2 billion El Niño drainage plan. This substantial funding, which has already been received by the county government, is specifically allocated to strengthen drainage infrastructure across all 85 wards of Nairobi in preparation for the anticipated El Niño rains. Works are already ongoing across every ward, and Governor Sakaja confirmed that significant improvements are expected “within a matter of months.”

President Ruto added that the Sh2 billion will support a comprehensive drainage overhaul that complements the ongoing Nairobi Regeneration Programme, with the goal of permanently addressing the flooding challenges that have affected the city for many years.

By combining transport expansion with disaster mitigation, the joint initiative showcases how the national and county governments plan to execute large-scale urban developments. Ruto and Sakaja emphasized that this cooperation pact—which has unlocked an additional KSh 80 billion for transformative projects across the city, including roads, markets, street lighting, and the Nairobi River regeneration programme—is essential for delivering the sustained progress needed to transform Nairobi’s economy and living standards.
